1954 film with English subtitles, and a winner of 8 Oscars. Superb performances. Brando as an ex-boxer unwittingly entangled in corrupt union politics. A sure control of atmosphere make this account of Brando's struggles against gangster Cobb's hold over New York's longshoremen's union very powerful. The embarrassing special pleading on behalf of informers, deriving presumably from the fact that Kazan named names during the McCarthy witch-hunts luckily does not detract from the film. Voice: Brando, M / Steiger, R / Saint, E M / et al. Format: videos and DVDs. |
