Note |
1987 was a year of justice, daring and drama on the high seas. Klaus Barbie, a former Gestapo officer, was finally sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity during the Second World War; young pilot Matthias Rust flew solo across international borders in a Cessna, landing right in Moscow's Red Square, failing to amuse the Russians, who Rust to four years in a Soviet Labor Camp for blatant disregard of aviation rules and breaching Soviet air space. The art world mourned the death of Andy Warhol, and a ferry disaster in the UK killed 193 people, when it capsized in shallow water, only 100 meters from shore. |
