500    These are the papers of the Middleton family of British 
       descent. Edward Middleton bought property in Barbados and 
       South Carolina. His son, Arthur, inherited large estates 
       in England, South Carolina, and Barbados. Like his father,
       he became active in public affairs. He served in the 
       provincial government and was acting governor of South 
       Carolina from 1725 to 1730.
