Note For decades man have prepared for long voyages into space and explored the possibility of settling on other planets. Many people feel confined by this galactic province and see colonization of space as a possible alternative to their fragile, rather worn planet. But to make their dream come true they will not only have to challenge their knowledge and technological skills - they will also have to challenge their own fears and psychological limitations. The first programme in this three-part series, 500 Days in a Metal Tube, reveals unique footage from Russian experiments in the 1960s where people were confined for one whole year in a sealed spaceship mock up, to prepare for a long journey and to study the psychological impact of isolation. Two Years Sealed under Glass looks at 'Biosphere 2', the extraordinary American experiment that took place in the 1990s, where eight people were isolated in a huge glass construction for two whole years. And in the final programme, One Year Locked in a Container, scrutinizes the recent Russian/European experiment 'Mars 500', where a mixed crew of six people were locked up in a metal tube to simulate a 500 day trip to Mars.
