Note |
Based on the rich holdings of the National Library of Scotland, this collection is devoted to the papers of Sir John Kirk (1832-1922), explorer, naturalist, diplomat and founder of the East African rubber trade. It offers rich sources for Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Zanzibar. It includes some letters of his wife, Lady Helen Kirk and his surviving expedition notes and photographs as David Livingstone's chief assistant on the Second Zambesi Expedition, 1858-1863. Also included are photographic records and research that formed the basis of his Flora of Tropical Africa (1868-1917). Other letters, notes and photographs in the Kirk collection document his twenty years as British Consul in Zanzibar, his relationship with the Sultan, his work in abolishing the Slave Trade there and his negotiations with the Germans regarding the formation of German East Africa (now Tanzania). |
