"The papers here calendered number about four hundred and sixty, and comprise all those either emanating from, or directly relating to the English factories in India, which could be found either in tne archives of the India office or in the Manuscripts department of the British museum, with the addition of a few from the East Indies series at the Public record office ... Most of the documents here dealt with are entirely new to historical students. Of the remainder, a few have been printed, in whole or in part, in Purchas his pilgrimes, The embassy of Sir Thomas Roe (Hakluyt society, 1899), or other works: while ... abstracts of those in the o.c. (original correspondence) and East Indies series have already appeared in Mr. W. Noel Sainsbury's Calendar of state papers, East Indies, 1617-21, published by the Record office in 1870."--Pref. |
