Welcome to the University Art Gallery. Here, you can find a selection of the University Art Collection on display.

The Collection was started from scratch in 1963 with limited funds – an endowment of just £300 a year – and was made to bring our students into contact with real works of art. It specialises in Art in Britain from 1890 to 1940, which at the time of its creation was unfashionable and inexpensive. As the collection has developed over the years, it has grown to over 400 works. This specialisation in 50 years of art history has achieved national importance and international recognition, and has been described as ‘a collection of breath-taking quality’.

Amongst the University Art Collection, you will find works by the Camden Town Group and the Bloomsbury Group across a range of different mediums – to find out more about these groups, you can access many resources through the library. Check out the links below to our Library Search for further information.

As you move through the Gallery, take a look at some of the information panels accompanying the art works. Can you find the first piece acquired for the Collection? And later, as you walk around the rest of the university campus, keep an eye out as you’ll be able to see some of our other artworks on display – have you seen the Larkin toads across campus for example, or the Totem for Hull outside the library entrance?

Welcome to the First Floor, which is one of our main work areas in the library. You will find an array of soft seating, as well as desks and computers here. In front of the glass lifts, you will see one of our Information Points, which you can also find on every floor of the building. You can use them to search the library catalogue on the go, check your library account and renew your books.

Turn right, and on the wall in front of you, you will see one of our LapSafes, which you can use to borrow a laptop for the day. To take one of these out, you just have to tap your student card on the card reader, and follow the instructions on the screen. To the right of the LapSafe is our print top up machine. These are also located on the Ground Floor near the Book Return Machine, and are used to top up your printing credit. We can also do this for you at the Welcome Desk on the Ground Floor, so please do come and ask if you need assistance!

Looking to the back wall of the First Floor, there are three lifts which will take you to the Tower floors, all the way to our Observatory on the 7th floor. If you’re feeling energetic, our stairs are situated on both sides of the lifts through the glass doors.

Looking right, over the small bridge near our glass lifts, you can see the Reading Room on your right. It is through the doors on the left-hand side where the Skills Office is located. If you book any appointments with our wonderful Skills Team, you will have these meetings in this space. Our Skills Team offer an array of support to assist you during your degree, please check our library website out for more details. The very back doors of this area are our library offices, where the Librarian’s Office is located.

Welcome to the Reading Room. This is a silent study area, and contains workstations both with and without computers, self-checkout machines and print facilities. This is also where you will collect any items that you have reserved through the Library Search.

To your right as you enter the Reading Room, you will see one of our staff help desks. If you need any help finding an item, checking out a book or anything else, please speak to a member of staff.

To your left as you enter, you will see the Switch Off Zone. This is a place for you to relax and take a break from your studies. Within this space you will find the Reading Well Collection which includes books on well-being, and our Spotlight Collection which changes themes monthly. You can find out more information about both collections, including highlights of this month’s Spotlight on our social media pages.

Moving further into the Reading Room, you will find the High Demand Collection, which is a collection of the most popular and most used books in the library. If you're looking for a book on your course’s reading list, it will usually be found here. For a guide on how to find items in the library, check out the Skills Guide linked below, or speak to a member of library staff.

Keep moving further into the Reading Room, and you will find stairs to the mezzanine floor. This area is also accessible via lift – please speak to a member of staff if you would like any assistance. On the mezzanine, you will find more silent study spaces. We also hold several collections here, including the Leisure Collection for casual reading, our DVD Collection, physical copies of the latest periodicals, and recent postgraduate theses.

Welcome to the Librarian’s Office. This has been the office of the University of Hull librarian since 1959, when it was first used by Philip Larkin, until his death in 1985. Larkin oversaw the development of the Library building, which changed from a small collection of books to a purpose-built academic library.

The ‘Librarian’ sign on the door leading directly into the room from the outside is original to the 1959 building. A number of items within the office are also original: the bookcase; the electric fire and its surround, the parquet flooring and the desk. 

The desk has a brass plaque commemorating its use by Larkin. He boasted that it was “larger than that of President Kennedy”. It was restored as part of the redevelopment of the Library, and improved – the top is now real leather in place of the original leatherette. On the desk, you will also see a selection of Larkin’s personal items, including a pair of glasses in their original case, a Hermes 3000 Office Typewriter, and the pottery frog money box from circa 1970 as well. This is a reminder of Larkin’s poems Toads, written in 1954, and Toads revisited, written in 1962, about the necessity of going to work to earn a living. When asked by an interviewer “How did you arrive upon the image of a toad for work or labour?” he replied, “Sheer genius.”

The two prints behind the desk also belonged to Larkin. They depict the Radcliffe Camera, one of Oxford University’s many library buildings, and the Bridge of Sighs, at St John's College, Cambridge. Larkin read English at St John's College, Oxford. Larkin was a member of the Codrington Club at Oxford, this being a club for those who had made good use of the library.

On the north wall, there are photos of Larkin and the four librarians that succeeded him – Agnes Cumming, Ian Mowat, Richard Heseltine and Michelle Anderson. The typewriter below these photos is Larkin’s personal Olivetti Lettera DL.

In the bookcase on the west wall, you will find the Brynmor Jones Collection. It was assembled by the Library in honour of the university’s vice-chancellor Sir Brynmor Jones when he retired in 1972. It consists of first editions of titles published between 1890 and 1940 that were nominated by the University’s academic departments as being of particular importance. The period of 1890 to 1940 is also the focus of the University Art Collection. 

The librarian’s office is still in use as of today by our current librarian, Chris Awre.

Finding a book is easy using the Library Search; you can access the search through the library website, or at any of the Information Points in the building. When using the Library Search, you can search by author, title or just by using keywords. On the left-hand side of your search page, you can use the filters to refine your search by subject, library location, and more. The search results will include both physical and online resources. To access an online resource such as an eBook, click the link directly on the Library Search page. If you have any problems accessing online resources, please get in touch with us via LiveChat, or speak to a member of staff.

If you are looking for a physical resource, the Library Search will give you information about where to find it in the building – make sure you take note of the class mark, and the floor where the item is located. Alternatively, you also have the option to reserve the item and collect it from the Reading Room. Once an item is ready for collection, you’ll get an email notification to your student account.

Once you have found the item you want to borrow or have picked it up from the Reading Room, all you need to do is to check the item out. The easiest way to do this is to use one of our self-service check out machines. You can find these in the Reading Room, and on the first and second floors. To get started, swipe your student card on the circular card pad and follow the onscreen instructions to guide you through the checkout process. If you need any help using these machines, speak to a member of staff who will be able to guide you through the process.

Welcome to the Tower Floors. Here, you will find that floors 3 to 6 follow a similar layout, with The Observatory on 7th floor providing wrap-around views of the city. In the Tower, you will find that the books are set out in different subject areas on each floor. You can find a floor guide next to the lifts and in the stairwells, which details the subjects covered on each floor.

If you’re searching for a book using the Library Search, the search results will show you which floor you can find the item on. The items shelved in the Tower tend to offer a more specialised or in-depth perspective on the subjects taught at the university. Whilst you might find most of your core reading in the High Demand Collection in the Reading Room, you may find further reading or additional texts in the Tower. If you’d like some help with finding items in any of our collections, speak to a member of staff.

Each floor is set out with a common design. On each floor, you will find individual workspaces, social study spaces, soft seating areas and private group study rooms. You will also find printing facilities on every floor. From floors 3 to 6, computer workstations and extra laptop desks are around the perimeter, and in the center of the floor you will find a soft-seating area with tables for more collaborative study. On all floors, you can access WiFi via Eduroam.

The University of Hull is home to thousands of unique special collections and archives. These resources can help you add detailed subject knowledge, originality and criticality to your assignments and research. On 7th Floor you can find our Rare Books Collection, in the glass cube-shaped room. For security and preservation reasons, visits are by appointment only, but don’t let that put you off as these resources are here to be used.

Our rare books collections comprise a wide variety of titles published between 1473 and 2002, with strengths in the 18th and early 20th centuries. 18 languages, living and dead, are represented in the collections, with places of publication ranging from Amsterdam to Zwickau.

Our holdings contain the historic libraries of Hull Minster, St Mary's, Lowgate and Hull Grammar School, three English incunabula, as well as many examples of fine printing from private presses, including Doves, Eragny, Golden Cockerel, Gregynog, Kelmscott and Nonesuch. We also hold first editions of milestone works, such as Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary (1755), Einstein's Annalen der Physik 1905 papers, and Lady Chatterley's lover by D.H. Lawrence (1928).

Collections cover a range of subjects, including Literature, religion, philosophy, history, art, science, law, geography, political science, education, and medicine. We have a number of significant botanical works, such as William Curtis’s hand-coloured serial, The Botanical Magazine, published in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and The compleat herbal, written by Botanist to the French King, Joseph Pitton de Tournefort and published in 1719.

The oldest book we have was written by John Duns Scotus, a late 13th century Franciscan monk. It is a commentary on a work by Peter Lombard, and was printed in 1473, just 20 years after Gutenberg’s Bible.

The smallest book we have is a miniature chained bible, complete with small lectern and magnifying glass.

A fan favourite, and one of our largest items, is the Book of the Dead printed in 1899. It contains facsimiles of the papyri of Hunefer, Ȧnhai, Kerāsher and Netchemet, with supplementary text from the papyrus of Nu, and incorporates Ancient Egyptian illustrations and hieroglyphs.

One of the weirdly prettiest items we hold, and a staff favourite, is Robert Hooke’s Micrographia. Published in 1665, the work contains engravings of Hooke’s fine drawings detailing his observations of organisms, including a fly, gnat and flea, through a microscope.

Whilst a second staff favourite is a series of books printed and sold by the Ferraby family in the Market Place, Hull, over three generations, between 1719 and 1848. The series includes an account of the life of William Nevison published in the early 1800s. Nevison was a notorious highwayman, active in Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, who was hanged in 1684 at York. Like the more famous Dick Turpin, he was transformed into a romantic figure in popular literature after his death.

We will now take a tour clockwise around the 7th floor, but feel free to browse the sights of the city at your leisure – throughout this floor you will find markers on the walls above the windows, pointing out some of the city’s landmarks.

We will start the tour from the eastern windows – that's the left hand side as you walk out of the lifts. In the immediate distance, you can see the Eastern part of campus. Amongst the campus buildings, you will be able to see the Allam Sport Centre, The Courtyard accommodation, the Student Union building and many more. If you would like a Campus Map to explore the campus in your own time, speak to a member of staff at the Welcome Desk on your way out of the library.

Several of our university buildings are named after historical local figures – for example, the Larkin building is named after the poet and novelist Philip Larkin, who was librarian here for over 30 years. The Librarian’s Office on the First Floor still features the original parquet floor, fireplace and Larkin’s desk. Elsewhere on campus, we also have the Venn building, named after the mathematician and philosopher John Venn – if you’re wondering, yes, he did introduce the Venn diagram!

Looking out to the distance, on a clear day you’ll be able to see out to the coast and the Port of Hull. Seabourn trade here can be traced back to before the 13th century, and the maritime economy has been an important part of the city ever since. In present times, the port is mostly used for commercial shipping, but you can also catch a passenger ferry across to the Netherlands on a mini-cruise. If you’d like to find out more about the history of the port, you can visit the Hull History Centre.

Take a look out through the eastern corner, and you will be able to see The Avenues and the City Centre. Historically, The Avenues were an area of high status Victorian housing, and if you take a walk through this area today, you will find many green plaques to mark where famous residents of Hull lived, including Philip Larkin and Amy Johnson. On Newland Avenue and Princes Avenue, you can also find lots of independent cafes and small businesses, as well as bars and restaurants.

Within the City Centre you can find loads of things to do – there are plenty of shops and restaurants, several music venues as well as an abundance of free museums. To get to the City Centre from the university, you can catch a quick bus at the front of campus which will take you into the heart of the city. From where you’re standing, you can see the domed green roof of the Maritime Museum, which is nearby to Hull City Hall and Ferens Art Gallery. The wavy glass roof you can see is the top of St Stephens, one of the main shopping areas in the city. Look closely and you may be able to see the Wilberforce Monument – a statue honoring the abolitionist William Wilberforce, who was born in Hull.

Looking to the west of the City Centre, you will see a large rectangular blue building – this is the Hull Royal Infirmary.

To the right of the infirmary, you’ll see a crown-like roof to the MKM Stadium. This is home to two of the city’s main sporting teams: Hull City and Hull FC. The stadium has a capacity of over 25,000, and hosts a mixture of sporting and musical events throughout the year.

Now, walk along to the southwest corner, where you will be able to see the Humber Bridge. Completed over 40 years ago, the bridge can be seen for miles around, even on a cloudy day! Across the bridge you can find Barton Upon Humber and Lincoln, which you can visit by car or bus for a day out.

Closer to campus, you will be able to see the Hull Business School, as well as more of our accommodation at Westfield Court. Next to the library, you’ll also find the award-winning Allam Medical Building. This is the home of the Faculty of Health Sciences, and boasts a simulated operating theatre, hospital ward and intensive care unit.

Now, turn to face the west windows. On a clear day, you will be able to see out towards the Yorkshire Wolds, Cottingham and Beverley. In Beverley you can find lots of independent shops and pubs, as well as Beverley Minster, part of which inspired the design of Westminster Abbey in London. You can visit Beverley by car, bus or train from Hull, and it’s the perfect day out whatever you’re looking for.

Our archive collections are held offsite at Hull History Centre, which is located in the city centre on Worship Street. The History Centre is open to all and is free to use. You can find information to help you plan a visit in the link at the bottom of this page.

The archives at Hull History Centre cover a whole range of subject areas; these include literature, theatre and drama, politics and campaigning, maritime activity, landed families and estates management, local governance and cultural organisations.

We have key collections relating to civil liberties in the UK during the 20th century, including the archives of Liberty, the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants and Justice. We hold internationally significant collections relating to maritime missions, including the records of the Apostleship of the Sea and the Mission to Seafarers. Our politics collections include the records of the British New Left in the 1950s, Hull and District Trades Council, and MPs such as John Prescott. We hold collections for the ancient Sykes and Hotham families, as well as the Constable Maxwells of Everingham. Our Hull City Council collections include record series relating to civil defence services in Hull during the Second World War, slum clearance, and town planning. And our literary collections include the surviving writings, letters and photographs of the poet, and the University’s former librarian, Philip Larkin.

Common record types include letters, subject files, pamphlets, maps, diaries, land deeds and photographs. Such records can help you understand the historical context around events and issues studied as part of your degree.

The oldest item we hold is dated between 1087-1096 and is a small piece of parchment recording an exchange of land in France between an abbot and a nobleman. Parchment is a durable writing support created from processed animal skin. It was used in the medieval period to record significant land transactions. Many of our collections contain records recorded on parchment.

Amongst the smallest items we have is a tiny red and gold leather pocket diary, about 3 inches tall, belonging to Sir Christopher Sykes. In it, he records financial matters relating to estate management such as payments for household items purchased and work undertaken in 1772. He also includes a handwritten list of useful names, such as Mr Whitehouse of Derby who was a watchmaker, Mr Wynche, a chemist.

Conversely, one of the biggest items we have is a roller blind on which the local poet Stevie Smith recorded a stanza written by Emperor Hadrian. The blind originally hung in the home of her friend Ronald Ewing, and it is said that she wrote the verse whilst at a party thrown by Ewing in 1969.

Finally, one of the weirdest items we have is a box containing locks of hair belonging to 19th century members of the Baines family of Bell Hall in Naburn. Prior to the 20th century, it was common practice to keep a lock of hair belonging to a loved one in a locket or diary so that a part of them could be carried with you always.
