We’re giving your library a lift
We’re carrying out a major lift upgrade to improve accessibility, safety and reliability across the Library.
Lift project underway
As part of our ongoing work to improve accessibility for all Library users, a major upgrade of our three main lifts began on Monday 14 July 2025, starting with the right‑hand lift. This long‑term project is expected to run until May 2027.
These essential upgrades will enhance accessibility, safety and reliability across the building, supporting our commitment to creating an inclusive and easy‑to‑navigate Library environment for everyone.
Latest update March 2026
The upgrade work to the middle lift has started; the widening of the lift doorway will commence on 19th March and will last approximately three weeks. There will be increased noise in the Library during that time, and you may want to use the Reading Room as it is the space furthest away from the source of noise.
The two other lifts remain usable while the middle lift is upgraded.
